If you have watched Win Wenders’ Perfect Days, you may have seen that Tokyo has some extremely stylish public toilets.
Conceived by the Nippon Foundation, a self-described social innovation non-profit, with support from Shibuya City (one of Tokyo’s wards, or neighbourhoods), the Tokyo Toilet initiative brought together some of the biggest names in architecture and design to renovate 17 public restrooms throughout Shibuya. The Nippon Foundation explains that “toilets are a symbol of Japan’s world-renowned hospitality culture,” and if you have traveled widely, you know how important (and rare) it is to find a nice public toilet. All the toilets are wheelchair-accessible and maintained by dedicated cleaning crews (watch the Wim Wenders movie!).
